New Gas Price Rate for 2017 in Bangladesh

The Bangladesh Government hikes the gas price yet again. On Thursday, February 23, 2017 the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) decided to hike the prevailing gas prices. The increased rates will be applicable for all consumers. The price has been enhanced by 22.7 percent and shall be implemented in two phases. The government defended this price raise by stating that it is already giving huge subsidy on gas.

Therefore, households using double burners will have to pay Tk. 800.00 each from next month compared to present rate of Tk. 650.00. On the other hand, those using single burners will have to pay Tk. 750.00 each against the present Tk 600.00. The prices would be increased again on June 1, 2017 by another Tk. 150 for each gas stove.

It is quite imaginable that the gas price hike would push up transport costs, which in turn would hike the prices of daily essentials as well. Meanwhile, protest started to spark against the price raise as several left-leaning political parties yesterday called a half-day hartal (general strike) in the capital for Tuesday, February 28, 2017 disapproving the gas price hike.
