The novel tries to describe that human beings are inherently evil and that this evil awakens within them with the slightest stimulus. Kurtz, the antagonist in this novel used to be good a natured individual with multiple talents, but ultimately he turned into evil as he started to live in the midst of uncivilized people. As he lived outside of the civilized society for an extended period of time, he forgot the civilized standard of living.
