The cabinet of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh has approved the list of public holidays for the forthcoming year 2021. The approval was given on November 02, 2020 at a virtual meeting of the cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. After the meeting the Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam briefed about the approved holidays.
Like the current year, the year 2021 will also consist of 22 (twenty two) days of public holidays. Out of total 22 days of holidays, 14 (fourteen) days will be observed as Ordinary Public Holidays while 8 (eight) days will be observed under Executive Order. But unfortunately, 07 (seven) days, out of the 22 holidays will be on the weekly holidays. However, in the previous year, 8 (eight) days, out of the 22 holidays fell on weekly holidays. Consequently, in the upcoming year, the service holders will miss 4 (four) days of holidays.
According to the list, Shab-e-Barat is on Monday, March 29, Shab-e-Qadr is on Monday, May 10, Eid-ul-Fitr is on May 13, Eid-ul-Azha is on Tuesday, July 20, Ashura is on Thursday, August 19, and Eid-e-Milad un-Nabi is on Tuesday, October 19. However, depending on the appearance of the moon, the holidays may they move back and forth by one day, which is mentioned in the calendar. The employees of the republic will have the opportunity to enjoy three days of optional leave on the occasion of the religious festival.
Similarly, there is a provision of two days’ optional leave for the employees belonging to various small ethnic groups working in and outside the Chittagong Hill Tracts on the occasion of the main social festival Vaisabi or similar social festival. Holidays include national holidays and important religious days for different communities.
